Becoming a Good Citizen

FROM DAISY

Guess what?  Yesterday, I got to take this really fun test!  My mom gave me a bunch of commands (and, of course, I obeyed them all), and then – at the end – I got my picture taken and a blue ribbon!  I don’t see what all the fuss was about, but my mom was really excited.

Korynn and Daisy, after Daisy passed her Canine Good Citizen test and achieved her “blue ribbon”

Tonight I get to go to work again.  I’m so excited to see all of my friends from Phamaly at the theatre tonight.  I love going up onstage and seeing all of my fans in the crowd.  I’m a little sad though, because this weekend will be the last weekend that I’ll get to go onstage.  But, my mom told me that I’ll be working again soon – so I’m OK with that.

FROM KORYNN

This weekend is closing weekend for the Annie production up in Denver (Sunday is closing night).  I’m sad at the thought of this chapter of our lives closing.  Not only has it been a remarkeable experience for me, but Daisy has loved every minute.  In fact, that’s what got me started on this new chapter of ours… I have decided to pursue using Daisy as a therapy dog after the Annie production ends.  It seems like a natural transition for the both of us, and I know Daisy would just LOVE it (she’s already serving that purpose inadvertantly every night after the show).

To be honest, finding out what  I need to do in order to use Daisy as a therapy dog has not been easy.  There is not a lot of information out there on the topic.  However, after some digging and research, I discovered that the first step in this pursuit was to have Daisy obtain her Canine Good Citizen certfication/blue ribbon… and she did that yesterday!  I am so proud of her.  The second step is to register her with the AKC – which we are in the process of right now.  After that, we need to find a good place that could use her as a therapy dog and find out what their specific requirements are.  It is a detailed process, but we are well on our way!

I just got my super-dog, Daisy, recently from the Humane Society. She is a 40 lb black lab mix. She is a little over 2 years old, and had her left-hind leg amputated around the middle of August. She loves giving kisses, and LOVES laying down and rolling around in the grass.

  1. A TRIPAWD SUPER STAR ROCK STAR INEED!!!

You are touching soooo many lives Daisy!!! You really are such a Goodwill Ambassador for tripawds!! 🙂 And it’s clear you and your Mom both understand your mission very well!

Korynn, you might want to touch base with Michelle (user name Sassy) as she has one of her Rotties who is in the process of becoming a Therapy Dog. I think she’s at the point now where she and her dog are doing ten “training sessions” where someone observes hiw well the dog does when they visit their “patients”. As you said, it’s quite an ordeal getting to the certification poi t.

Clearly Daisy has what it takes!! She’s already spreading happi ess everywhere she goes……and that’s the best therapy ever!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

    CONGRATULATIONS ON BEING A “GOOD CITIZEN” DAISY!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 STANDING OVATION FOR YOU!!! 🙂 🙂

    Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

    1. Thank you for the tip! I tried looking up a username of Sassy. I found a Sassy, it said the user had not ented any information. Do you have any contact information (i.e., a URL link to a contact page, etc.) for Michelle?

  2. Better than that….I’m emailing Michelle right now to bring her to your blog. And the reason you couldn’t fi d her is because I gave you the wrong user name!!! DUDH!! It’s Michelle, not Sassy! Anyway, I’ll have her hop over here! 🙂 🙂

  3. Congrats Daisy & Korynn. Yeah there isn’t a whole lot of information out there. You are on the right direction for becoming a Therapy dog. The Canine Good Citizen is the right step. Find an organization that you want to become certified through and contact them. We went through Love on a Leash. It is a national organization. There may even be a chapter in your area. http://www.loveonaleash.org/
You can read up on the requirements there and see if there is a chapter in your area. We passed our control test and now are doing the 10- 1 hour visits to become certified. (We did a lot of class work and taking Snickers different places before we tested almost a years worth) but that is because I wanted her 100% before testing for the control. Once we complete that 10 visits we will be certified and can go to visits on our own. Right now as an IT (in training team) we have to have a certified team with us.

I also know once we become certified we can also get other certifications from AKC for Therapy dogs. We are going to work on that too 🙂

hugs to you & Daisy and Congrats again

    Michelle, Angel Sassy & Snickers
